Yes copyright is cheap and worthwhile protection and you should register, but I don't know if you should count on walking into a publisher's office with a certificate.  The certificate doesn't exactly get expressed mailed back the same day it is received.  

If your copyright is already being infringed, you can ask for an expedited certificate.  My understanding is that cuts down the required time from years to months.  

So unless your strategy to keep your music laying around for years before seeking a publisher, forget about trying to impress with a certificate.

Dear Ms. Galinski,
Even though a copyright registration is fast and inexpensive, there is no protection for the creative idea without a preagreement. I had a client that, on his own went to a publisher showed a work which was then used as the subject for a noninfringing movie.
