I am a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from a top school. I am considering taking the patent bar and pursuing a job as an agent. One of my main concerns however, is the ostensible low celing (both paywise and in advancement)  for an agent. Are there any people here who moved from patent agency to engineering? Or anyone who could at least advise me on the possibility of going back to industry if I am dissatisfied with my salary/job after 4 or 5 years as a patent agent? Do engineering companies view work as a patent agent as an asset or liability? Will I be no better off iafter 4 years as a patent agent than I am now, in terms of working as an engineer? obviously this is a broad question, so please answer based on your own industry. thanks

Have you ruled out the idea of going to law school?

I think the answer depends on your particular position.  A position working closely with scientist or engineers at a high tech company might look a lot like engineering experience.   A position at a firm might translate as engineering skills becoming stagnant.

I am not familiar with mechanical engineering, but for an electrical  engineer, a four year old skill set can be awful stale in some disciplines but maybe not in others.
