I'm under H1B status doing computer science related work.
Can I take the patent bar or should the H1B be related to the legal industry?

I understand that I cannot get registered as an agent unless my H1B is for that purpose.. but can I just clear the exam and then look for a related job? or is it the other way around?

You don't want to rely on what I say here.  Call OED.

But my understanding is that you will need an H1B status with duties that include patent work in order to take the exam.  

Even after taking the exam, you will not be registered as a patent agent.  You will have a limited recognition to do work for your employer, but you won't get a reg number.
