Can I pass using this method?
« on: 05-16-06 at 11:19 am »

Since I am broke as a joke, i was wondering if anyone here has passed in this fashion:  Simply getting a copy of the MPEP (i have E8R2 in pdf - all 2900+ pages) and doing all of the old exams here: http://www.legaled.com/patentbarexam.htm

Is it possible?  If not, i was thinking of buying some PLI materials from Ebay.

Thanks!

It's possible to pass using only the materials you describe to prepare.   However, the MPEP is not organized as a tutorial, so I would expect a method of preparing for the exam using only old exams and the MPEP to be a difficult project for a novice.

Yes, you can pass using this method, but the question you should be asking yourself is how many times do you want to take the exam before passing?  Considering it costs roughly $400 per test, it would probably be worth it to pay $500-$1000 for used study materials so you can pass on the first attempt instead of the 3rd or 4th.

Trying to read the MPEP without any basic knowledge of patent law is going to be confusing and frustrating.  The MPEP is full of dense legal language and heavily cross references itself.  The first section that should be read are the patent laws and rules, which are part of the appendix located in the back of the MPEP.

I used an old PLI course (2002) which explained everything in a clear and concise manner and provided good examples to help clarify the finer points of patent law.  Just make sure that your study guide is at least post AIPA.
