Hello All,

I have been a R&D Ph.D. in biotech for about 7 years, and I am interested in getting into a patent/IP related career (but not as a full lawyer). I'm a bit confused whether the best approach would be to become a patent agent, or become certified as a paralegal and then try to specialize in patent/IP issues? Or both? How woud these two paths differ in the kind of job I might qualify for and the kind of work I might do? Also, although I frequently see ads for patent/trademark paralegals in my city, I haven't seen much recruiting for patent agents. Is this a good indication of the relative difficulty in landing a position after following either of two training paths above?

Thanks for any input! If anyone knows of a different site that offers more (concrete) career advice in this vien, please pass it along.

With your experience and education, it would not make sense to become a paralegal (no offense to any paralegals out there).   Before you can become a patent agent you have to pass the patent bar.
