copyright on words to old hymns?
« on: 05-01-06 at 09:33 am »

I'm editing a memoir. The author has quoted the words to two old hymns: Blest be the Tie That Binds and O Master, Let Me Walk With Thee. I believe these may be in the public domain, but how do I find out for sure? Thanks!

I've gotten good results by putting the words of the song into a search engine (like google) and tracking down information such as the author's lifetime and the date of publication.

I believe that "Blest be the Tie That Binds" is safely in the  public domain as a work that was published well before 1923.
