Help!
« on: 04-20-06 at 09:00 am »

I'm a first-year law student in DC, electrical/mechanical background and USPTO certification. I had a job lined up for the summer with a small patent prosecution firm for the last month, and was just notified yesterday that they will no longer be hiring me. Because I had accepted the offer so long ago, I haven't been looking for a job, and have no opportunities on the horizon. Needless to say, I am not happy.

Can any benevolent attorneys/agents out there point me in the right direction? I'm trying to cover all my bases as quickly as possible here. Thanks!

I doubt I'll offer suggestions you haven't already thought of but my ideas are:
(1) If there are other firms that gave you an offer, call and see if they still have room.  Maybe even offer to work for less $$.  If there are firms that never got back to you, follow up with them.
(2) See if a professor at your school still needs research assistants for the summer.  The pay would probably suck, but if you explain your situation someone might find room for you.
(3) call the tech transfer office at your school (if it has one) and see if they could hire you for the summer or let you volunteer.
(4) Is it too late to do something at the PTO?  I think I heard there was some unpaid summer program there.  Even if the deadline has passed, I would call and explain your situation and see if they will let you apply late.

And I would absolutely tell your career services office if you have not done so already.  This is totally unacceptable for a firm to do this, and I'm sure your school won't be happy about it.

On the bright side, at least this didn't happen to you as a 2L.  Good luck!
