Transfering NFL logo's to wood
« on: 01-25-06 at 10:21 pm »

For those of you that don't know, there is a hobby out there called Scroll Sawing.  It's the carving of very intricate detail into wood, using a machine called a Scroll Saw. Those that do it, are often called Scrollers.

The largest public scrollers group, on the web, is the MSN Groups group, called:
FreeScrollSawPatterns.

It can be viewed by the public, here:
http://groups.msn.com/FreeScrollsawPatterns/

This group is constantly sharing wood "Patterns" of various subject matter, to others, for their scrolling pleasure.  As the group name suggests, they give these patterns out to each other, free.

One of the groups assistant managers, is giving away, to any group member that posts their eMail address, NFL team logos, so that members may scroll the logo into wood.  All you do is reply to that assistant manger's message, by posting your eMail address...and walla! the pattern appears in your eMail box.

This manager is doing this so publicly.  I cannot believe that the group isn't getting "spanked" for doing this.  They have thousands of members.

I posted a message, asking the legalities of this, on their group forum, and the manager told me that since she's giving the patterns of the NFL logos away, she didn't see a problem....and then she quickly suspended my membership !!!

Just because she is giving away the patterns of the team logo's, doesn't make it legal, correct?

I am a little miffed that she suspended my membership, just for asking a simple question.....so....is there some place one might report such a blatant copyright infringment?

I have not used any of these patterns, but it seems to me that rather than chastising the "originator", it would be best to check out the legality of this and then go to the "originator" with the facts and not with just what you might think.  I know that people all across the country do this with college mascots, emblems, etc and sell them at sporting events at the various colleges.  It would be good to know the "legal answer" to this question.  It is definitely a valid question and needs to be answered correctly.

If the only defense is that the logos are being given away, the defense is pretty weak.   I did not make an attempt to assess any other lines of defense.
