We are a small movie production company with about 50 movies under our belt. One film in particular has had widespread local acclaim and any direct association with it is a definite plus in the local production world.

An individual who used to work for us split off about ten years ago and started his own firm. He is stating on his website that he wrote and produced the movie mentioned in the previous paragraph. The actual facts are that he was a co-writer with four others and received an associate producer credit for some extra work he did which is vastly different than writing and producing the movie as he is claiming. There is no doubt that his false claims bring credibility as well as business to his company.

My question is, does the act of falsely claiming an ownership in a movie constitute a violation of law, and if so, which laws does it violate?

Seems like accurate information to me.  If he is a co-writer and a co producer as you claim, then he wrote and produced the movie. If people assume he was the sole producer and writer, well thats their bad assumptions, not a dishonest practice or even remotely approaching a "vast difference".

Did Spielberg Direct Indiana Jones?! Well yes he did, but there were several other directors who did lil action scenes and "B-crew" stuff as well, does that mean Steven Spielberg needs to advertise every "B-crew" director whenever he talks about the movies he produced or directed?
