Social Network Patent - What Do You Think?
« on: 02-01-12 at 06:32 pm »

I had an idea for a new facebook plugin. I wrote up the provisional and filed, but I'm trying to find out whether people think it would be patentable.

Basically, a user would grant one of their friends "linking privileges". These linking privileges would have certain defined limitations, characteristics and properties. They would allow the person being granted the privileges to grant "viewing privileges" to another member, subject to whatever limitations the person granting the viewing privileges decides. For example, if I was trying to set my friend up with a girl, my friend would give me linking privileges that might expire a month from now. I'd unlock my friends profile to the girl I wanted to set him up with, lets say for a week, so that she could see his profile.

Would this kind of thing be patentable?

Thanks everyone.

Yes.  I don't know if it's novel and non-trivial (non-obvious), but it's the kind of technology for which patents can be obtained -- i.e., patent eligible.

Regards.

Friends don't let friends file provisional patent applications.
