Physics Route
« on: 01-04-12 at 08:32 am »

I'm currently a masters student in a physics program. My B.S. is in math and physics (double major) and I have the option of going for the PhD. I have had four years of research (undergraduate and graduate level) in experimental condensed matter physics. The sub-field is of course technical, but probably also responsible for most of the patents coming from physicists - due to it simply being such a large and varied sub-field.

I personally have experience relating to optics, microelectromechanical systems fabrication (MEMS), chemical vapor processes, semiconductors, and other assorted things you would find under the broad term 'nanotechnology'. I have done some contracting work for a small startup company. In the near future I will be learning new things in the realm of 'soft' condensed matter. Things of a biological nature and what have you.

I've also got some publications in scientific journals.

My question is this: On the road to becoming a patent agent, patent lawyer or science advisor, is a PhD desirable? Is it so much more so than a M.S.? I can see that being the case for science advisor...

A corollary question to that is: is it worth it to put off my life for another few years?

Well, I'm a PhD physicist whose concentration was experimental solid-state physics (back in the day before it was subsumed into condensed matter physics).  I've been a patent agent for 5 yrs now.  If you want my perspective, please send me a message via this site.  Please include your e-mail and location.

Physics majors are very well prepared for a variety of technologies: mechanical, electromechanical, electrical engineering, materials, etc.

Many hiring partners never realize this though.  I think your time is better spent getting an MSEE, for example, than a PhD in Physics unless you have many university clients that want to see Dr. in the attorney's name.
