Reg: WIPO application family members
« on: 11-17-11 at 01:15 pm »

Hi all,

I am new to this site. So sorry if this the wrong place to to ask the question below.

My question is for some wipo applications there are family members from wipo it self. I am not taking about the same number but diffrent kind code. Here is a example: For patent WO2011101728A2 these are the family members: WO2011001274, WO2011070441, WO2011132061A2. So in what circumstances an applicant will file the multiple applications in the same family. Is it like USPTO (continuation, CIP, division) or something else.

Thanks.

Although the notion of the word 'family' needs definition, probably in this case the applications that you mention are connected because they cite one (or more) same priority document(s).
Probably, thus, these applications are related inventions. Filing multiple applications on related inventions can be caused because you want to prevent lack of unity problems or because you plan to license parts to different licensees (i.e. the method patent to a manufacturer and a product patent to a retailer).
