Is there such a thing as the Patent Bar? How would you write it on a resume?

Folks do sometimes loosely refer to membership in the "patent bar".

If you look at firm websites, you will see different phrasings
  • Bar Admissions: PTO & Georgia
  • Memberships: PTO & Georgia
  • Bar & Court Admissions: PTO, Georgia, and Northern District of Georgia

Personally, I wouldn't pay much attention to exactly how the job candidate phrased it. But lawyers in general can be quite picky about the smallest thing, so don't take my word for it.

dab:  "admited NY, NJ, and USPTO". The "registered patent attorney" goes elswhere, depending on the communication involved.

"Admitted to practice law in [state(s)] and registered to practice before the USPTO." Seems correct to me.

That portion of my resume reads as follows:

Admitted to Practice:
- in Massachusetts;
- in New Hampshire;
- before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office; and
- before U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit

As a non-patent attorney, I wonder if it's wise not to use phrasing that separates out your status as a registered patent attorney from your admissions to various agencies and courts, which usually only require you to be in good standing and know someone to recommend you.  I'm admitted to practice before the CAFC (and even before the PTO, insofar as that can be claimed for a registered trademark attorney), but while I've worked in patent litigation, I am not a "registered patent attorney" and neither qualified to draft claims nor handle other aspects of prosecution.

I wouldn't rely on "admission before the USPTO" or "registered to practice before the USPTO" to convey full information about being a registered patent attorney.  I like dab2's "registered patent attorney with the USPTO" language.

This post is an off-the-cuff musing and should not be misconstrued as legal advice. THERE IS NO ATTORNEY-CLIENT RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN US. Proper legal advice requires full disclosure of facts-not appropriate to a public forum-and attorney research time and effort which has not been expended here.

I don't disagree. But in OP's specific context -- a resume -- then I think the folks evaluating OP's resume know that all of these different phrasing convey the quality the employer is looking for: that he's passed the patent bar (and is still in good standing).

"Registered patent attorney" is a succint way of conveying both the JD and the PTO registration number, without getting into the gory details of which state and which court. Gory details which may or may not matter, depending on the context.

The above only applies for the USA.
In Europe the notion patent attorney is used for people who are registered with the EPO. In general, these patent attorneys will not be entitled to represent their clients in court, but they will only be entitled to represent their clients before the European Patent Office.

Regards.
