Patent prosecution book recommendations?
« on: 11-04-11 at 11:07 pm »

Hi all,

I’m a senior in EE graduating this semester and thinking about patent law as a next step (or possibly after getting some engineering industry experience). I have found a ton of enormously helpful info on this forum on what the patent field is all about and from what I can tell it seems to be a good match for me as a career. I am wondering if any of the knowledgeable people here can point me in the direction of a good introductory book or some other resource (maybe a website?) that could give me a better sense of the type of work a patent professional (attorney or agent) really deals with on a day to day basis. I am specifically interested in prosecution. I would guess that there’s no substitute for day to day experience as an intern, or technology specialist, etc but short of that is there anything I can do to familiarize myself somewhat with what patent prosecution work entails?

I’ve seen recommendations on patentlyo.com for the intro books Patent It Yourself and Patent Law Essentials: A Concise Guide, but I get the sense that these are basically an explanation of the patenting process or the IP/patent field in general. What I am really looking for is to get a taste for myself of what patent prosecution is actually like more than reading about the particulars of the law.

I would really appreciate any suggestions or advice.

Maybe my post was a little vague. Does anyone have any suggestions for books or materials that cover patent law beyond prosecution itself? I'm curious to learn more about legal opinion letters, licensing, patent infringement, etc. Of course it would need to be reasonably understandable to a non-lawyer/patent agent...
