Looking for a single proper word to use
« on: 10-21-11 at 12:34 pm »

In a utility patent, when describing an invention that changes the function of the objects it's physically applied to, can you use an adjective such as "transformative"?

For instance, especially in the title line (but also throughout the patent): Transformative liquid and method altering plant-based materials with new colors and/or functions.

(Plus, is such a title better written as:

Transformative liquid for altering plant-based materials with new colors and/or functions.

?)

Boozerker:  Sure you can use it, be your own lexicographer.  The only question is whether the PHOSITA reading the spec would know what you meant by the term and would be able to determine when they had a transforamtive liquid in a beaker and when they did not.  To state the obvious, it would be a good idea to have as many specific examples as possible bcs relying on purely functional language could easily get you into written description troubles in chem and biochem cases.
