Can I just copy this?
« on: 09-28-11 at 07:24 pm »

I've just found this site www.as400-news.com, could I just borrow the technical
data from the web site or do I need special permission?. I am doing a  project for school.

Can't see the site, but generally speaking under copyright law data itself is free to be used by anyone.*  By contrast, the way in which the data is arranged or displayed, however, usually cannot be copied without permission from the author/copyright holder, unless the data is merely arranged in some normal, logical non-creative way, such as alphabetically.

That being said, if you're a student and you are actually copying the layout some of the data, even if the data's only arranged alphabetically or in a simple pie chart, make sure you also check with your school's policy on copying.  Sometimes schools' policies on copying have their own quirks apart from copyright law.

*Of course, you should give attribution to the source in any event, but that's separate from copyright law.

This post is an off-the-cuff musing and should not be misconstrued as legal advice. THERE IS NO ATTORNEY-CLIENT RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN US. Proper legal advice requires full disclosure of facts-not appropriate to a public forum-and attorney research time and effort which has not been expended here.

The site is just a copy of Wikipedia articles as well as about a dozen 'articles' which were apparently written for SEO purposes.

You may copy data -- that is, facts -- from any site freely.  You have to be careful not to impermissibly copy the expression of those facts.  Of course, what would be "impermissible" is a difficult question.
