If they still have the Nutshell series, that was great when I started.  I would also read the TMEP (no fooling).  It's really informative.

I was looking for something that I could use to sustain a practice. I have a general understanding of trademarks and patents. I am more interested in responding to office actions and possibly TTAB issues.

In that case, the TMEP is what I go to most often (and then to Westlaw searches).  Of course, McCarthy is the gold-standard reference, but it's expensive.  I cut it out of my WL subscription last year and really haven't missed it.
