Area where there are most patents?
« on: 07-27-11 at 12:02 am »

Hey guys,

I know law firms are crazy about hiring EE's CompSci's these days, but exactly which part of EE is it that there are the most patents?
I mean EE and CompSci are really broad majors.

circuits; semiconductors; hardware implementation of software/firmware

Do you have any feeling for how much that semiconductor work can be (or is) competently handled by a chemist or chemical engineer?

Maybe some of the methods for making semiconductors/semiconductor materials can be handled by chem, chem-e, or materials people.

I'd add two more EE subspecialities as areas in which a lot of patents appear.

Communications. Meaning modulation, encoding, etc., the stuff you see in IEEE stds like DSL, WiFi, WiMax, cablemodem, etc.

Processor, bus, and memory architectures (sub-sub-specialty). Perhaps that what klav meant by "hw implementation of sw/fw".

I'd say there are far less patents in EE subfields like power and control systems.

I am a chemist/Mats Sci guy by training, and I handle semiconductor manufacturing all the time.  Once circuit diagrams get involved, I usually kick the case to someone with a better background.  My current empoyer has tons of EE work though, and they are really pushing to have me do some of it.  As a result, I am teaching myself circuit and EE at night.  It is not going well.

Pretty much what I had in mind.  Though obviously there are patents outside those particular subfields.
