Assuming the person has a BS from Boston University, got their JD from Columbia, and is registered with the USPTO, how much would you expect them to make annually in a large city such as Boston or NYC? Please tell me about salaries as well as possible bonuses, if any.

Also, don't consider the bad job market. This wouldn't happen for several years so just assume everything would be fine job-wise. Keep the salary figure in 2011 dollars though.

Thanks so much!

It all depends.  The schools are enough to land a job in biglaw, but ninety percent of your marketability in patent law is a function of your technical background.  Top end would be $160k/yr ($170/yr for NYC) assuming a desirable undergraduate major (EE, CS, CompE, etc.) and decent law school grades.  Bonuses are a function of the firm and how much time you're willing to dump, but can range up to ~30% of base salary.
