Where to pull up Asian patents?
« on: 07-22-11 at 07:08 am »

I know this is the European thread but it's the only geo-specific thread I could see.
I'm trying to do some Prior Art search but for the life of me I can't pull up almost any Asian patents, particulary Korean (I suppose, since it's KR) and Chinese (CN). Can you give us a website where these are disclosed? Kind of frustrating reading "Abstract not available for KR.........".

Here's a good place to look: http://worldwide.espacenet.com/

You can look up PCT applications at wipo.int.  That could be helpful for Asian cases in which the PCT is used.

Some Asian patent offices have on-line search tools for their patents and publications.

I wonder if there are extra-US patents on Google.....  well, let me try.  Nope.  I tried patents.google.co.jp and still got US patents.

Regards.

Espacenet is great, but I'm afraid not a single KR in detail.

Poxoq is GREAT, but there too it doesn't regognize KRs.

Wipo just tried, nothing shows on random KR searches.

I noticed too Google is US based and that's it, the rest of the world can bugger off apparently.. ???

It is true that there are hardly any free sites where information on Asian patens and applications is easily retrievable. Even the paid-for databases have great difficulty in completing their sets.

If you are in need of information and willing to pay some money, you could try to hire one of those patent service providers in India. Some of them seem able to search in Asian languages.

Regards.

Alistair:  You may try "Boliven" by Cambridge IP (based in Cambridge UK, not Cambridge MA, USA).  I like the site (seriously).  Certainly, unlike US-based Google, a British concern would have a non-parochial view and have easily accessable KR patent information.  Right?  Would never tell the  the non-English speaking world to "bugger-off".  Btw, in UK law "buggering" was a crime untill 188?.  Read it in law school, had to do with self defense in a felony matter by a guy getting buggered.  Also, you could always learn Korean, no?  On a more serious note, contact Korean counsel, or the outfit in India noted above.
