Software
« on: 07-10-11 at 07:32 am »

Hello,

My question has to do with naming a series of software applications.

As an example lets say that I want to create a bunch of different applications in the finance category.

The names of these applications would be:

Personal Finance Edge
Business Finance Edge
Budged Edge
Etc..

Would I have to file a trademark for each name or can I just file for the word "Edge" and secure the right to put any combination of words in front of it?

Thanks,
Steve

That's a difficult question to answer definitively.  Much depends on how you use the mark(s).  If from use it appears that the mark is EDGE on a series of software applications, you might be able to register that portion alone.  If not, then you will have to register each mark separately.

Also, you should know that registering a mark does not "secure the right" to use the mark.  That right is created through senior use.
