Website copyrights - application coverage
« on: 06-29-11 at 08:42 pm »

I understand the value of having a Copyright registration. If I am filing for the copyright on a website, what is exactly covered? I understand source code, text and graphics can be covered, but am I missing anything else? I understand they do not allow you to file for the layout or format of a website. Am I missing anything here that I should try to get covered in the application?

Source code, text, graphics, I would also add any other multimedia elements if they exist on the site (video/audio) or if there are certain elements such as data that you have selected/ordered/arranged in a way that exhibits more than a minimal amount of creativity, it protects the way that it's selected/ordered.  You're correct that the layout and format won't be copyrightable, as well as ideas/concepts/etc.
