Is an LLM worth it?
« on: 06-29-11 at 08:11 pm »

Been out of law school 15+ years, and out of undgrad 25.  ME degree, with no design experience.  I left a civil litigation job to study for the patent bar, passing it on the first try.  Unfortunately, the economy had tanked by then and I couldn't even get a sniff of an interview.  I'm in the Philadelphia area, and see that Seton Hall law school offers various IP LLM degrees, one of which would allow me to focus on patents.  It would be a pain in the butt for a year, but if it would enable me to get my foot in the door, I would strongly consider it.  Would an LLM impress firms to finally give me a chance, or is it just another pipe dream on my part?

Not sure I can do the math any more.  It's been a long time.

I hear it is like riding a bike.  :-\

I am also interested in the groups opinion as I am also contemplating either LLM or MSEE (or something similar).

I understand (I was an old returning student even for my undergrad).

But I was thinking about your situation again this morning.  EE, yeah plenty of differential equations and what not to re-learn.

But in your area, aren't there a number of medical implant manufacturers?  Thinking about the guys who make replacement joints, spinal fusion kits, that sort of thing.  I think there was one called Synthes actually in Philly or Chester?  And Ethicon (think it's a J&J sub) isn't that far away.  Anyway, with an ME background, I'm wondering if you could see what firms do work for these sorts of manufacturers and target them selling yourself as an ME.  (NB, could be those firms are barely scraping up enough ME work for the ME's they already have, and so will have no desire to train a noob.)

Additionally, was thinking that instead of an MSEE (which you don't want to do), maybe you could tack on an MS in biomed engineering more easily.  By "easily", I mean both in terms of potentially less pre-reqs, and as likely being more in your comfort zone.  Just tossing stuff out - have to leave the actual R&D to you (if interested) to see what the possibilities are in these regards.

Finally, while unlikely to bear fruit, have you targeted any in-house positions for companies likely to need ME-type patenting?  It's rare but sometimes a corporate law department will train patent attorneys in-house.

Good luck to you.

You fall off a lot, hit your head on a curb, and spend the rest of your life in a coma?  :o

No, really, just wanted to mention that MIT OCW has their core calculus courses online, including full lectures on YouTube.  It helps.

not worth it. patent lawyers learn to be patent lawyers through years of experience (passing the patent bar means nothing other than passing the patent bar). u missed your boat 15 years ago. u should have started out as a patent lawyer instead of doing civil litigation.  ::)
