Hey everyone,

First of all, let me introduce myself...  I'm 21 and live in Canada, second year in my undergrad program studying business administration (specializing in finance). In two months I will be leaving to study at Bocconi University in Italy for one year and I wish to clear things up about my career path before coming back.

It has now been a while that my interests rise in intellectual property and I would have the intent of entering this field (maybe as a patent agent?) in either Canada or the US.

As of now, I have absolutely no experience in any technical field.

And this is where I need your help... I am first of all wondering if there will be any openings available in IP if I have a degree in business administration?

What do you suggest I do in my situation if I truly want this?

Any kind of feedback is extremely appreciated. :)

Regards

Not really.

Change majors to electrical engineering.  After undergrad, get a law degree.

You still have a number of critical steps to go through in your decision making process.

Figure out what patent prosecution and litigation are first.  If you like patent prosecution, go back to school and get a whole new undergrad, since you need a technical degree, EE is the best (and the hardest). If you like patent litigation, do amazing on the LSATs, then go to a top law school, otherwise, do not go to law school and choose a different field.  If you do not like either of these options, IP law is not a good fit for you.  It will require you going in a completely different direction from your current path.

You could do copyright or trademark law or even IP licensing.  Those areas don't require a technical degree.  You could also do patent litigation.  If you have an interest in international law, you might like doing patent litigation before the US International Trade Commission or its Canadian equivalent.  As for patent prosecution, I think you're going to face many difficult career obstacles without an undergraduate degree in science or engineering field.
