Hey Jim,

Hope the following suggestions may help. 

Just as a complete guess, there may be a few ways in, depending on how far you want to get off the traditional legal track:  (1)  Nightschool MSEE or MSCS and trolling for jobs.  You'll be about 5 years into the legal profession when you can start patent law, but you'll have an amazing foundation and will be very marketable in the long run if someone gives you a break. 

(2)  Talking to your firm to see if they will help subsidize your patent malpractice insurance.  If so, you can perhaps hustle little CS clients.  Little firms may help you out or may let you pay the (approx) $5k out of pocket.  Of course, make sure you reach out to mentors and get a solid network so that you can run the million or so questions by someone when you're prosecuting patents.
