Copyright and knitting patterns
« on: 06-23-11 at 09:01 pm »

Long story short, my mother knits.  A LOT.  Recently, some of her friends took an interest in a number of infant hat designs that she created, and suggested that she submit them to a well known publisher of knitting patterns.  She did so, and the publisher has offered her a contract to license 7 of her patterns in exchange for a fairly nice royalty (7% of net sales) and a $1200 advance.

That said, my mother has asked me to register copyrights on the patterns.  Anyone have any tips for doing that?  Any issues I should be aware of re: copyrighting knitting patterns?  The last time I substantively considered a copyright issue was many years ago.

Thanks in advance.

Best,

Klav

I have filed a few copyrights for knitting and other craft work.  Not saying that I have any real expertise on the subject, but typically I will file a visual arts copyright for the pattern and a literary arts copyright, if there are written instructions for how to use the pattern to create the craft.  I usually also include the pattern along with the CTX to be on the safe side.
