Well I'll be starting at UT this fall...
If it is still open in 3 years (or if you want SA's before then) let me know.  I do have EE.

I practice in downtown Arlington, TX, but I could be had. Four years out, but hung out my own shingle...probably a dozen apps in prosecution now, and another half dozen clients with patent apps paid for and sitting in my IOLTA, waiting for me to finish. I also practice bankruptcy and litigation. You looking to fill a permanent spot in a Dallas office, or just need some assistance in the DFW area?

Your question also brought up a nagging question to me.

I see a plethora of training materials and classes for patent prosecution, but they all seem to be pretty expensive, and typically geared toward litigation or understanding some nuance that matters not so often. I'd like to see some nuts and bolts online classes that are reasonably priced.

Is there a good class that folks would recommend to build prosecution skills? I have an MSEE and pretty confident in my technical understanding. I've found that when I err in litigation, opposing counsel helps me learn the fast and hard way. In bankruptcy matters, the judges, clerks and trustees are pretty generous in helping to build their bar's professionalism. However, in patent prosecution, it seems that you file a patent application and then wait two years to find out that your application sucks (or in Latin, "it sucketh). You can't ask even a good mentor to babysit every little thing you do.

Yours,

I took Kayton's course back in 2001, and it was very good.  They are now called Patent Resources Group.  I am pretty sure  this is the course I took:  http://www.patentresources.com/Courses.aspx?link=The+Patent+Workshop%3a+Fundamental+Best+Practices+for+Patent+Prosecution+for+2011

Looks like a sweet course, but $3k is a lot of dough, even if it is worth it.

Thanks...good to at least identify something good.

Here is a pretty good book I just read.

Invention Analysis and Claiming: A Patent Lawyer's Guide
Ronald D. Slusky

I think I paid $50 or so on Amazon

A good patent prosecutor drafts and prosecutes with an eye towards litigation.  Indeed, some would say that how well a prosecutor understands the consequences of prosecution on litigation is a measure of how good that patent prosecutor is.

The Slusky book mentioned by number_27 is pretty good, though it is not perfect.  The last version I read was still advocating invention analysis and patent drafting using the so-called problem solution approach, which is considered by many to no longer be a desirable methodology.  Still, the book provides a useful start.

I am aware that the problem solving methodology is considered old school, but I have not seen any deleterious impact of using that approach. I follow your "ready the patent for litigation" caution...if you have another suggestion, I'm all ears.

While we are at it, what commercial tools and treatises are most common? I have Chisum on Patents through Lexis, but I've not used it enough to know if it is helpful or not. What does the brain trust here think of that?

The Chisum books are easily the best patent-related references available.

The nice $4,000 10 volume (or whatever) set is really nice to have, yet expensive.  A few years ago, the condensed version (3 books) was available on Ebay for something like $100.
