How long after an interview
« on: 06-18-11 at 07:13 am »

How long after an interview does it take to get an offer from a big law firm? It has been 48 business hours since the interview, and I haven't heard from them. Just curious what others out there have experienced. The position was a technology specialist in chemistry. I thought the interview went well, and I sent thank you emails to everyone, but no response.

Did you ask them if they were interviewing other candidates ?
Did you ask them when the interviews would be over ?
Did you ask them how they will notify the selected candidate ?

If they want you, they normally will let you know sooner rather than later.  48 business hours sounds like 6 business days?  I think they have moved on to other candidates.

I have had mixed results - in one case, it took more than a month to get an offer just a few months before the mass layoffs.  In this case, I was represented by a head hunter that kept me updated and they were ensuring the work load would be there.  In another case, I was given an offer somewhere between one and two weeks from the interview.  In that case, it was radio silence between the interview and the call from the partner.  Both big law firms.

The interview was on Wednesday, so I meant to say it has been two business days, sorry for not making that clear. They have had the same position listing for over a year now, and they use the same one to hire multiple people throughout the year. They got back to me 2 hours after I submitted my resume/cover letter, and the interview was the next day, so I am worried that I haven't heard from them yet. I didn't want to seem too pushy so I didn't ask questions like, when will you get back to me, what is the salary, etc etc. Now I am wishing I asked how they would get back to me and what the time frame was. Live and learn.  :-\

it doesnt hurt to call up your interviewer and ask them about whether you got the job.

If you were interviewed by more than one person, there may be an evaluation process/meeting to get a concensus as to whether to make an offer.  After that, they would probably need HR to set a salary, get the salary and offer approved from the PGL, and then put together an offer letter.  All that to say that although they were quick to arrange the interview, it may take a little longer to move through the offer process.  As blakesq mentioned, it doesn't hurt to give them a call to see where you stand.

It sounds like you are being pushy.

for a patent lawyer, being pushy is a good quality.  Pushing back against the patent office is good, as opposed to rolling over when the USPTO rejects your patent application.

I just wouldn't read too much into having an interview early last week and not yet hearing anything.

It really isn't a big deal.  These things take time.
