Jobs as patent agent
« on: 06-14-11 at 08:52 pm »

I'm located in South Florida and am studying to take the patent bar exam.  I have a B.S. in physics with some materials science work and have some patent experience as a patent classifier assigning classification codes and prior art searches. I currently work at an environmental lab, but it's not really a long term career.  I've always been interested in becoming a paten agent.  I got some letters from firms stating to contact them when I'm certified and they'll evaluate their needs.  I'm just hesitant to spend the money for study course and for the exam and not get a job out of this.  How marketable and what are my chances in getting a job from this?  Also any advice is welcome.

IMHO getting your registration number is a good idea.  Being a registered patent agent will make it easier for you to obtain a position.  If I were in your position and wanted to have a career in the area of patent prosecution, I would spend the time and money to take and pass the exam.

Meh, only 74 registered practitioners are in Miami, so there isn't much going on in South Florida.  If you are going to make it as a patent agent, there are much better locations.
