Job Market
« on: 06-13-11 at 02:12 pm »

I just wanted to talk to everyone to see how the job market is for the Patent prosecution professionals in the computer/electrical engineering area?

I see job posting, but I heard that there are still a lot of people applying for a single job.

Thanks.

It is very tough at the entry level, reasonable in the mid experience range of 3-8 years, then somewhat tough in the 9+ years range.

Do the 9+ year difficulties apply to patent agents or just patent attorneys that are expected to have a significant book of business by then?

Can you give an idea of how tough "tough" is in the entry level arena?

Guy graduated in 2009; top half T50 law school; 3 yrs wrk experience as eng; clerkship throughout LS doing pros & lit up to 20 hrs a wk; nice guy too.  Still no prep & pros job - going solo.  Admittedly tougher since, mechanical and IL, but really only marginally so.

I thought that patent filings were going up. How is it possible that filings are going up but no entry levels are hired? Furthermore, when do you know that you are out of the entry level? Does it mean that you are doing prosecution without any supervision or guidance? Currently, I am drafting about 1 new application a month and doing other portfolio work and active in one litigation case.

Ya turn the screws on your existing workforce.  Plus there is more to the workload of an IP firm than just filing new applications.

1 new case a month is very light IMO unless you are doing a significant number of OA responses also.

You will be fine so long as you don't screw up in law school.
