2011 Loyola Patent Law Program
« on: 06-13-11 at 10:41 am »

I was wondering if anyone could give advice on how to prepare for these interviews? What types of things are employers looking for once you have made it to the preselect interviewing stage?

I did not list my law school gpa on my resume because it was sub 3 (First semester was 2.1....managed to bring it up all the way to a 2.9 now and I still have 2 yrs left!), but I ended up getting 8 preselects and 5 alternates (#1s and 2s).  I am doing a joint degree in a life science, attend a T20 law school, passed the patent bar prior to law school, and have been working for a patent prosecution firm for the past year. Do you think my lackluster gpa will hurt me at the fair? Any tips as I prepare for the fair?

I was thinking of bringing an Office Action Response I drafted at the firm as compared to a regular law school writing sample? I was thinking that it would show I am capable of doing the work and help me stand out among my peers. Thoughts?

Thanks in advance!

a lackluster gpa always hurts.  Your best bet is to redirect to your positives: experience (working right now) and ambition (already passed the patent bar).

If you're asked about your GPA, spin it as best you can and go from there.

Generally, a GPA is a weedout factor, but not a controlling factor.

Can't hurt to have both types available, that way if they ask for a writing sample you can offer either or both.  Make sure the OA response isn't in a non-pub case, of course.
