Question 16 on Patent Bar App (traffic tickets)
« on: 06-10-11 at 10:20 pm »

Background: I had a couple of traffic tickets a few years back, both were over $100. I had went to traffic school to clear them, and nothing came up in my driving record.

My Question: I already have everything ready except the official driving record, and am trying to send my app in as soon as possible. Do I need my official driving record in this case? Can I just disclose (and explain) my tickets on my application?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Are traffic tickets seriously even a remote issue for taking the exam?

"Have you ever been arrested, charged, or held by Federal, State or other law enforcement
authorities for any violation of any Federal or State law, or any county or municipal law,
regulation or ordinance? (Do not include any misdemeanor before your 16th birthday or
traffic violations for which the fine was $100 or less.)"
is a question on the application form.  By implication, traffic tickets >$100 need to be reported.

Call up OED and ask if you need to supply supporting docs.

Thanks. Just called OED, and they said I have to submit an official record. Now is time to march down to a court house and spend some money.

In our experience, they DO expect official records of all such infractions. They don't seem to care too much about them, though, unless they individually or collectively display some weak moral nature. But they WILL look harshly on failure to disclose such infractions, seeing that itself as an indication of weak moral nature (if not outright fraudulent intent). So, our best advice is to get the paperwork, and then it almost certainly won't be an issue.
