Can someone explain what this patent covers?
« on: 06-10-11 at 09:38 pm »

A few days ago this patent was issued. Patent number 7,957,524

Does this patent make is so no one can produce screen protectors for electronic devices or just film protectors that cover the body of the device.

When it says "film" does it mean any film? Like vinyl or does it just mean the clear protector film that they make their current full body protectors out of?

If someone that is more familiar with patents could help
Me out and explain this to me it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance :-)

This is what's covered:

Quote
What is claimed is:

1. A body cover for an electronic device, the covering comprising:
   a first film configured to cover a first surface of an electronic device, the first surface having a screen disposed therein, wherein the first film lays flat against the first surface;
a second film, physically separate from the first film, configured to cover a second surface of the electronic device such that the second film lays flat against the second surface, wherein the second film includes edges that wrap around and cover portions of one or more sides of the electronic device, the one or more sides connecting the first surface of the device with the second surface; and
one or more cuts formed in the second film to accommodate a corner of the electronic device, the one or more cuts formed such that the second film lays flat against the second surface as the second film approaches the corner of the electronic device; wherein the first film and the second film do not overlap each other.

....

There are more claims, but hopefully this illustrates my point.  What this patent covers is far more specific that just screen protectors or film protectors for a device body.

Regards.

So with this patent in place can a company still make screen protectors for devices? It sounds like the patent is for the body protectors of devices, not screen protectors.

Thanks again for all your help

The can make any screen or body protector that is not described by that, or any other, claim of the patent without infringing the patent.

To really answer your question, you're going to have to actually read the claim with a specific protector in mind.
