Software Copyright Question
« on: 06-01-11 at 04:56 pm »

I have a web site, let's call it XYX.com. On this web site, I will be selling software that I have developed.

My business is simply myself; at this point I don't have any business registered with the city, county, or state that I live in.

How do I phrase the copyright Copyright (c) 2011, XYZ or can and should I use Copyright (c) 2011, XYZ.com?

Have you registered a copyright with the Copyright Office?

If you wrote the software, then you as an individual own the copyright.

There are some advantages to registering the copyright, if you have not done so, and it is very inexpensive.

As far as the copyright notice, that is not required at all for legal protection.  It serves mostly as a notice to others that you are aware of your rights and intend to protect them.  So if you are worried about who to show as the copyright owner, you could simply say "Copyright (C) 2011, your name" or even just "Copyright (C) 2011."
