In the above posted article, see, http://blogs.luc.edu/mediaclips/files/2011/01/The-New-York-Times-Is-Law-School-a-Losing-Game-1.8.11.pdf

The red words sound right, the above article says :" But so far, the warnings have been unheeded. Job openings for lawyers have plunged, but law schools
are not dialing back enrollment. About 43,000 J.D.’s were handed out in 2009, 11 percent more than a decade earlier, and the number of law schools keeps rising
— nine new ones in the last 10 years, and five more seeking approval to open in the future".

Have you considered that the economic situation will be different 3-4 years from now? If the economy recovers, then the ends justify the means. Personally, I would rather be in school while everyone else is worried about loosing their jobs. As for working ridiculous hours, if that is not what you like, then work for the PTO, they have reasonable hours and great benefits. There are options out there, even in a down economy. Every good career comes with caveats.

If you get a law degree, then go work somewhere much more interesting ... like ... be a SEC trail lawyer and prosecute bad people for committing stock fraud ... see, http://jobview.usajobs.gov/GetJob.aspx?JobID=99670440&JobTitle=Trial+Attorney&q=sec+attorney&where=&x=0&y=0&brd=3876&vw=b&FedEmp=N&FedPub=Y&AVSDM=2011-06-03+12%3a05%3a00

Nobody should be getting a law degree and 100k+ of debt to work at the PTO as an examiner. The PTO DOES NOT reimburse law school debt. However, the link above says,

The SEC also has a Student Loan Repayment program for permanent employees. Up to $10,000 a year (60K cap) in student loan repayments for those who meet program criteria.

Plus, the linked attorney job pays better, pays better than an examiner can make.

Any bumpkin can examine cases. If you have intelligence/talent then go work somewhere where society benefits from your skills.

And who exactly gets those opportunities?  If your resume is good enough to be an SEC trial attorney then it is definitely good enough for BigLaw, that pretty much eliminates anyone but the top 5% at a T30 school.  Heck many law students head to the SEC just to get experience for BigLaw.

Well when the choice for said law student is between unemployment, sh*tlaw or a salary below 100K (which includes may attorney positions)  and the PTO, I would go for the PTO as well.
