:( Forgot to bio PhD background. It'll be quite pathetic to get 65k-80k, especially for DC/NY's high living cost!

Interviewed for a job in NYC BigLaw was told the range was 'about 70k' by the recruiter.  This was about 2007 before the economic implosion.

My general feeling (and own experience) is that a big firm will start an agent at a fairly low salary (75-90K for associate level billable hours), but provide generous raises year to year based on performance and rate charged to clients.  I think firms are initially wary of any agent, but also realize they are quite profitable to partners, and will therefore pay accordingly, assuming the rate is justified and hours are met.  I was at a firm 5 years, and went 80K-100k-120K-160K, all based on the money brought in the door.  In sum, don't make a judgment of your earning potential at a firm solely based on the first year salary.
