Re: Ideas vs. Inventions

I found this older topic while seeking out info and unfortunately I am more confused now then  when I first started out but I am guessing that is a good thing because I was already to take my "idea", hire a patent attorney and sit back and get rich.  I quickly learned from your site here that I am having a pipe dream if I think that is the case.

So I guess my question is, what’s the most sensible, economical approach to pursue once you have this idea in your head?  Keep in mind I have zero experience/knowledge of designing or engineering a working product from the idea/concept stage.  I have my ideas of how it "might" work but would rather leave this to those who are educated and experienced in designing a working and functional drawing/model.

I just don’t know if I should  hire a patent attorney first, a draftsman, an engineer, a manufacturer or some combination of all the above or some other kind of professional ???

If it helps any, my idea is for a kitchen gadget that I assume would either be incorporated into an existing common kitchen item  ( so I would license this to an established manufacturer if anyone was even interested ) or perhaps it would be a universal ad-on which could be used with most any existing brand.   Like the world needs another kitchen gadget, right?   :)

Anyway, thanks to all those for this forum and sorry in advance as I am sure this question I am asking has been asked 9 million different ways already.

Here's my old FAQ on that topic.

Apparently, my out-dated and neglected site still sorta works.

Regards.

You should be able to clearly and specifically describe your idea in order to begin the patenting process.  However, it would be a good idea to consult with a registered patent attorney before spending too much money on engineering and promotion.  Some blog articles on my website may be useful to you.  Good luck!
