I'm a filmmaker working on a documentary examining the effect
of xxxxx and similar drugs on American society.

If I always notice that xxxxx is a reg. trademark of Pfizer
Pharmaceuticals In. and that they have no involvement
with the film, am I safe

Your use is likely not a trademark use, and therefore is not a violation of the Lanham Act.  Furthermore, because your project is a documentary, it is likely protected by the First Amendment anyway.
