Copying Japanese Movies
« on: 03-24-11 at 06:34 pm »

I was wondering.  If I live in the U.S. can I copy and sell Japanese produced movies in the U.S.?  Everything in the beginning of the movie is in Japanese, so there is no way to understand any copyright notice there.
Just wondering.

No.

There are international treaties that require countries to honor and enforce one another's copyrights.

Moreover, it makes no difference whether you can read the copyright notices.  In fact, in most countries (including the United States) such notice is not even required in order to be protected under copyright law.  ]

Generally speaking, countries do not enforce foreign copyrights.  Instead, by international agreement, countries give national copyright protection to works created in other countries.   For example, in the US, Japanese works are given the same protection that the US gives to works created in the US.

Thank you - good clarification.
