Author Topic: Looking for guidance now that my patent is granted in few weeks  (Read 1048 times)

First of all, I don't know if this is the proper place among the forum to ask, so please move the thread in its respective one if isn't here.

I'm saying "few weeks" because my attorney already was contacted by the USPTO 2 months ago.

My invention is a medical device that will substitute other(s) medical device(s).  I won't identify the product here but let's say it is targeted for emergency rooms and ambulances.

I have been all these years doing things and working in another fields, but suddenly the patent is there... I was really caught off guard.

I am paying the fees for the utility and I still have not a business plan to sell it.  I have some presentation in my pc, but I don't know if it is enough for.

Thinking to get people from China or Taiwan to manufacture it...  I don't know...

My idea is to sell the granted invention to main hospitals or pharmaceuticals, but I think that hospitals will be the proper target.  But how to know if a manufacturer can sell the product to the hospitals? 

So, any guidance or counseling of how exact to do it?

Ideally all of these questions are looked at *before* the patent application is pursued. Ideally.

That said, this is typical chicken and egg problem. Gotta go for both the chicken and the egg. Figure out who's doing the buying and how they do it. Talk to the potential buyers, try to "sell" it, gauge their demand. Would they buy direct or through distributors? If there are distributors, talk to them, they will likely have a marketing group and have their own idea about the potential demand. Manufacturers have their marketing groups too, so it doesn't hurt to talk to them too from the start. You can talk to them again once you have positive feedback from buyers/distributors.

There are promoters that will do that work for you for a cut and/or a fee, cant recommend anyone particular though.

I am a registered user of it myself since January 2011 and it has help me a lot in how to progress marketing.
I understand another $1000 is a lot. But for me, it was worth it.
From my two months experience with the course, I don't think Stephen is really about making money on this. He really wants to help people with inventions.

If you are not going to use this service, here is my advice for your situation.
If your invention is for a device to be manufactured, I suggest you to go after manufacturers.
I don't think any hospital administers manufacturing. They only purchase from suppliers.

If you license with manufacturer, your invention can be used by many hospitals that purchase the device.
Bigger market, wider benefit!

You gotta do your legwork to find potential licensees and develop marketing material.
Remember, your marketing material should be for consumer, not for your licensee. I was surprised to learn this at inventRight.
You gotta have at lease more than 5 companies to contact. It is tough to crack into their attention.

It is easy for inventors to imagine that companies line up to have contract for their invention.
Believe me, I was no different.
But that is not usually the case even if your invention is indeed great.

So, I bid you to take this whole thing as a serious project and plan carefully.
