How do you deal with unfamiliar technolgy
« on: 02-20-11 at 07:42 pm »

I work in a law firm (CS background) and I am often assigned OAs dealing with an unfamiliar technology. I don't mean not my technical background, but rather a different technical art e.g. EE, biochem. In this economic environment, I dont have the option to turn away much of the work and I dont want to bother my colleagues more than necessary. Any practical advice besides Google? Any concrete methods or systematic approaches to this problem? I am sure I am not the only one dealing with this...

Talk to the inventor, or at least someone who works for the applicant and has an understanding of the invention.

If your regular contact at the applicant's office stonewalls you, try explaining that you want to provide the best possible service, and ensure that your client obtains the broadest claims to which the the client is entitled.
