Is Finnegan Henderson a good firm to work for?
« on: 02-15-11 at 08:31 pm »

I have heard that it's too stressful and demanding.  What do people who have worked there think?

Frankly what large law firm isn't stressful and demanding?  Any upscale law firm is going to be a slave driver.

I'll bite, although I'm a little out of date. I know there's at least another former Finnegan student around here, but I'm not going to out anyone.

I have heard a few things and I wonder if they're true:

1) Quite of few of Finnegan's student associates never make it to associate.

2) You need to bill way above the hourly requirement if you want to survive.

3) The firm loves Chinese speakers.

Are any of these things true?

Billable hour goals?

Salary range?

Flexibility with scheduling?

I have known lots of good, heads-up dedicated to IP people who work there. I have also known people who, if you catch them in a moment of honest reflection, or sometimes other people who used to work there, they will tell you that the hours, amount of work, and responsibility make it not worth their salary (a common lament in many large law firms that pay well). I honestly do not mean this to reflect negatively on the firm or anyone who works there, particularly the latter, but all I can say is, don't wish to hard, or you may get what you asked for.

I should also say that I am sure it is a good place to learn, and that there are plenty of people who want to work there very much, and that I never worked there myself. It just strikes me as kind of funny that the one of the first times I heard of the firm was when I asked how "joe X" was doing after he had gone to work there, and someone replied "oh, he complains that he does not have enough time to get out of his chair to eat his lunch, but he is making a lot of money".

I have a friend who works there.  What others say is true:  Very long hours.
