Masters Degree
« on: 02-08-11 at 08:37 pm »

Because of my Bachelor's in biology, im thinking of going for a masters after i graduate law school (im a 2L), or starting part time next year.  I can either get a Masters in Biology, or a Masters in Chemistry with a pharmaceutical chemistry concentration.  The Biology degree costs about 40% less, and will probably take me a bit less time.  Any thoughts on which one I should pursue?

I'm not in science, but from what I have seen, there is almost no market for biology degrees, unless it is something like bio-engineering.

I'd say it all depends on what you plan on doing with that degree once you have it (whichever it is) what type of career are you hoping for? Maybe read some of the articles on http://www.mastersdegree.net - about what sort of degrees are beneficial for what careers and all that good stuff.  Or maybe even check out http://www.pharmacytechniciancertification.com for learning more about what a masters in chemistry can do for you in regards to the pharmaceutical aspect.  Hope that helps mate!

I'm actually in the same boat, except I'm a 1st year post-call and I'm considering whether to go back and get an Msc in either biotechnology or pharmacology... What's hot right now?

The credible entry level credential for a life sciences patent attorney is a PhD.

Adding an MS to biology undergrad does little to move the needle.  You'll still have issues being taken seriously.

You can find other threads where this question has been answered. Frankly, I would get the chem/pharma backgound myself, as I am sure you aware of the whole universe of very interesting patent law that opens up. Like other people say, the PhD in Bio is basically the calling card. At least that is the universal answer here, and I myself would not want to spend the time getting one. Your Law skills would erode in the length of time it takes. If I were to go back to school, personally I would go to medical school, even if I never practiced medicine. It would be a shoe-in for a wide range of patentable technologies. Of course, it is difficult getting in, expensive, and not easy. But I think challenges are great. And besides, it would be, well, kind of fun to try on a pair of scrubs and know that I was doing it for a real reason!

You should go in for Law and do part time courses in the Masters in Biology or Chemistry..
