The Association of Parmesan producers acted on its protection as a geographical indication in Colombia.
The reason for this lies in the huge number of violations in the use of Parmigiano Reggiano for products in the country.
The request for this protection is based on The Andean common intellectual property regime, which covers except Colombia and Ecuador, Bolivia and Peru.
In Peru Parmigiano Reggiano is already registered geographical indication on the basis of the Lisbon Agreement.
Besides the above Parmigiano Reggiano will be able to seek protection through the Free Trade Agreement between EU and Colombia signed in 2010. To this Agreement is attached a shortlist of geographical indications which are protected on a reciprocal basis. Among them is Parmigiano Reggiano.
