Trademark Query - Probably easy to answer!
« on: 02-03-11 at 03:12 pm »

Hi there,

Basically, I want to make a fan t-shirt to sell for fans of x-factor uk contestants. Aiden  Grimshaw and Matt Cardle have an unofficial nickname when talked about together which is 'Maiden.' Would I run into legal trouble if I was to put 'I love Maiden' on a shirt (from possibly Iron Maiden)? They are both obviously in the music industry, but I only plan on using the word 'Maiden' and not 'Iron Maiden' and the two acts are completely unrelated, even though they both produce music. I have trawled through the IPO (UK) site and it is not very clear whether I would be ok with doing this.

A quick reply would be appreciated, thanks :)

To the extent that UK law is similar to US law on this point, I don't see any obvious issues in proceeding as you described.
