How to develop a prototype (on the cheap)?
« on: 01-25-11 at 10:31 pm »

So I've got some patent pending technology that I am considering having a prototype device developed.

I wouldn't even know where to begin.

Strike that.

With limited resources to devote to such an undertaking, I wouldn't even know where to begin.

I seem to recall there are groups out there that provide affordable, maybe even free/subsidized help to small entity inventors.

I am also trying to submit the technology to Megacorp(s), but that is what it is.

Anyway, any thoughts are appreciated, and I suppose this would be good info to know for clients in similar boat, too.

Traditionally, funding of the prototype is by angel investors, friends & family, another mortgage (back in the day), etc.

Angel investors are typically wealthy individuals with interest in participating in a new venture.  Naturally, they're not easy to find.

Depending on your technology, various options might exist for rapid, low-cost prototyping.

Regards.

haha... another mortgage.  That part made me laugh, only b/c there's NWIH I would go there.

Anyway, yeah Jim, I agree -- I think those are the best traditional routes, and I plan to pursue them to whatever end possible.

Thanks alot!

The technology is simple mechanical, related to a "cage" facial protector for hockey, lacrosse, football, etc. helmets, so it's not uber complex.

haha... another mortgage.  That part made me laugh, only b/c there's NWIH I would go there.

Back when I was working as an engineer, I pitched a service to my boss as being a sure money maker for the company, if the department would just put up a couple hundred kilo dollars for some measuring instruments.   My boss asked me if I was sure enough to mortage my house and buy the equipment myself.   I didn't find the question all that funny at the time.

I understand.  And, I don't think that's a viable option for many in this environment (nobody lending to anybody and mortgages going bad all over -- to borrow against a house, you practically have to show you don't need it at all).

However, many investors will want you to have some serious skin in the game.  Many won't want to assume a risk that you wouldn't take yourself.  So, the more you have at risk, the more inventors will be willing to take the same risk.

Regards.

This all boils down to the Mindset and value of your Invention to the Manufacture or Distributor (Brand Company)

These comments from Roger hit the nail on the Head for me below!

Ah, cool - I have actually come across that website before by coincidence.  Certainly preventing concussions is a hot item these days in contact sports.  I sent him an email just cuz you never know.
