For the unemployed physics majors among us
« on: 01-24-11 at 09:27 am »

The American Institute of Physics published a list of companies that have hired physics bachelors around the country, by state. Data is from 2007-2009, but it is a useful list to start researching potential employers.

Many patent agents that I know have suggested trying to get a science/research job at a company that has an active IP department. By getting your foot into the door and demonstrating interest in IP, you may be able to transition into the legal department.

I'm not sure whether other disciplines (bio, chem, ee, etc.) publish lists like this, but it is worth looking.

In-house patent agents are rare these days.  The trend at major corps has been to outsource prep and pros to outside counsel at el-cheapo rates.  In-house positions are primarily attorneys who ride herd on outside counsel and handle legal issues with licensing, portfolios, and infringement.  The other in-house positions are commonly paralegals who handle massive amounts of docketing and tracking all the cases submitted to the various outside counsels.  There was a time at major corps when scientists and engineers could transfer to the IP dept and get sent to law school part time gratis.  Those programs have been cutback severely.  Some corps do have tech specialists and patent developers who act as liasons between R&D and IP.  But they usually don't do prep and pros.

A (fortunately) employed physicist.
