Hello.
I am a published author. I own the copyright to all content of a book series that was published by a major publisher in 2002.

I would like to reprint the books my self for selling at convention appearances and book fairs. I also plan to self publish new titles based on these characters.

Am I able to do this without permission from the original publisher? Thank you.

So...sounds like you licensed your work.  If so, the terms of your license should describe each parties' rights and obligations.  Have someone check over your publishing agreement.

Regarding the new titles, you are probably safe creating the derivative works...that is one of the rights that an owner of a copyright can exercise.  However, I still think someone needs to look at your publishing agreement just to make sure you won't receive a nastigram from corporate counsel.
