Japanese and German patent application
« on: 12-08-10 at 02:52 am »

Hi All, ;D

I have an ongoing UK patent application for an energy saving device for pasenger vehicles.  It has been found to be novel and I am awaiting the substantive examination.

Some basic market research tells me that I should also be looking to patent this invention in UK, US, Japan, Germany and South Korea, these countries producing the largest amount of passenger vehicles.  As I understand it, these applications need to be filed before 12 months of the UK filing date if I want to UK filing to date to apply in these other contries.

Anyway, the US application is in, a process which couldn't have been easier.  However, the Japan Patent Office says that all applications have to be in Japanese (I thought it would be possible to apply in English and pay a translation fee), and the German Patent Office says that applications must be filed via a Patent Attourney.

If I have misunderstood either the Japanese or German patent processes, I would really appreciate some advice.

Many thanks in advance.

Paul.

Why don't you consider PCT filing?
And if you are going to file in all those countries, check out http://www.inovia.com.
They seem useful.
I am currently working on my priority filing in US and going to use them for my PCT filing.

I haven't researched the law myself, but the requirement for a Japanese translation is consistent with what I've been told by Japanese foreign associates.

I don't know anything specific about Germany, but a requirement for a registered practitioner doesn't sound unusual.
