Sanity check
« on: 12-03-10 at 02:42 pm »

Hi All,

My first post in this forum.  Looks like a great place for useful information.

I submitted my first patent application at the end of last year.  The invention is an energy saving device for use in all passenger vehicles; cars, trams, buses, trains and so on.

The search has since found it to be novel and I am now waiting for the substantive examination.  I'm told this could take up to 3 years from the UK patent office so I'm also considering writing to request that this is expedited, or maybe withdraw the current application and resubmit, requesting the examination at the same time (the UK IPO tell me that if you request and pay for the examination upon application, it follows immediately after the search).  Any comments on this would be very welcome.

The main reason for my post is that I am researching other markets in which to seek protection before the year has passed since my UK application date.  I have found that the main markets for my invention are US, Japan, Germany and South Korea.  From a cursory glance on the relevant patent office websites, the US and Japan patents look feasible.  The German IPO say that you must use a patent attourney which will obviously push up the cost and take more time.  I'm still to look at the South Korea patent office website but do not hold out much hope for success.  So now, I'm concentrating on US and Japan applications in order that I can secure my UK application date in these other regions.

I also want to approach Automotive OEMs or other possible investors to pitch the idea but am more or less lost on the best way to kick this off.

Any thoughts on other approaches / actions I should be taking are greatly appreciated.

Best regards and thanks in advance,

Paul.
